• Taking responsibility for childbirth

  After reading another blogger’s comments that women who opt to give birth unassisted at home are “insane and irresponsible”, I feel called to address the issue of responsibility. Parenthood is undoubtedly one of the biggest responsibilities anyone can take on. That responsibility starts during pregnancy – when our lifestyle choices and medical decisions can affect our baby’s health – and it continues with childbirth. All pregnant women have to decide how to give birth, and with whom in attendance, at some point. Thinking our choices through and deciding after thoroughly informing ourselves certainly seems best, but even those who do not do that arrive at a decision somehow. So, who is responsible for that decision?

• Why would you want to give birth on your own?

  Unassisted homebirths have just about as much variety as every other type of birth, and some women invite lots of friends or relatives to keep them company as they labor and welcome their babies into the world. Some women are social birthers, while others prefer solitude. Personally, I belong to the second group. Curious minds have often asked me why women would want to give birth on their own. In this post, I will write about my reasons for preferring to birth solo.

• My son’s unassisted homebirth story

  As I was finishing an article I was writing, I noticed some contractions, and wondered whether this could be labor. It was around midnight. Because the contractions were not regular yet, I really wasn’t sure if this was labor. To pass the time, I watched some television and surfed the net. Contraction Master (a website that times your contractions) told me that my contractions were about seven minutes apart. It was safe to assume this was the start of labor.
