  • Happy Birthday, daughter!

    Date: 2011.08.14 | Category: Parenting | Response: 3

My daughter is five tomorrow! It is hard to imagine that five years have passed from the time that I began wondering whether this was really labor, or just Braxton Hicks contractions. It would have been hard to imagine for me, back then, that the squishy newborn with her nose pushed slightly to the left from being in utero and making it out, would be such a wonderful, curious, vocal, and unique being. Happy birthday, daughter!

  • Unassisted homebirth with a breech baby?

    Date: 2011.07.27 | Category: Unassisted Childbirth | Response: 5

Vaginal breech births are, in many countries, rare these days. Cesarean sections have become the “standard of care” for breech deliveries, and if a breech baby is delivered vaginally, it happens with a lot of careful monitoring. Some homebirth midwives will attend breech births, but many more will not. Those who are contemplating unassisted childbirth may wonder what to do if their baby turns out to be breech. What are the risks of a vaginal breech birth? Would you plan an unassisted birth for a breech baby?

  • Hypnobirthing mothers are so calm during labor and birth!

    Date: 2011.07.21 | Category: Birth | Response: 5

Hypnobirthing is, I have to admit, something that I have always been skeptical of. Hypnobirthing and hypnobabies are techniques that are designed to help laboring women cope with the pain of labor through a type of self-hypnosis and positive affirmations during their births. Feeling dubious towards these techniques is probably natural for… well, skeptics like myself, but after watching numerous videos of women using hypnobirth techniques on YouTube, I have to say that I am definitely sold!

  • About spanking

    Date: 2011.07.18 | Category: Parenting | Response: 4

Anyone who is a parent is familiar with the ongoing debate about the merits of spanking children and the damage it can cause, and most people who are not parents know all about this too. The debate is especially relevant where we live because a new law is about to be passed to prevent parents from spanking their children. of course, the traditional family crowd is up in arms about it. Here are my views about spanking children.

  • Enjoying life and planning for a bright future

    Date: 2011.07.12 | Category: Parenting | Response: 8

The prompt to write about long-term parenting goals could not have come at a more appropriate time for us. My family stands at a cross roads, and this year, important decisions lie ahead. They relate to school, the country we live in, and life in general.

  • Should you give cloth diapers a try?

    Date: 2011.07.08 | Category: Babies | Response: 4

Disposable diapers are, of course, on the pregnancy checklist of stuff to buy for the majority of parents living in developed countries. They were on mine, too, when I was pregnant with my first child. Cloth diapers still provoke images of those thin squares of cotton that our grandmothers used, but wile some folks still use them (and love it!), there are now many other options, too. My son has been using the potty for around a year now (and he’s two and a half), and our cloth diapers have retired. I wanted to share my experience.

  • Is unassisted homebirth crazy?

    Date: 2011.07.05 | Category: Unassisted Childbirth | Response: 4

With this blog, my aim has been to offer concrete information to families who are contemplating a homebirth or an unassisted homebirth. I have touched on many of the possible complications of childbirth, as well as the events surrounding normal, health childbirth, as you can see on the unassisted birth information page. But, I have avoided discussing the perceived safety or risk of unassisted childbirth in general. Why?

  • Birth: How time changes perspectives and desires

    Date: 2011.07.04 | Category: Birth | Response: 6

Today we have a guest post from Momma Jorje, a “slightly crunchy momma” with a great blog about parenting. She gave birth three times at very different ages, and is pregnant again with Number Four. Enjoy reading this mother’s take on giving birth!

I first became pregnant at sixteen years old in 1989. I didn’t know much and I didn’t research much. I was an average student in school. I did attend the birthing classes provided through my hospital, which were Lamaze. Those classes consisted of three sessions. My stepmother was to be my birthing coach. I somehow knew, instinctually, that I would not want her to do the back massage.

  • Gender stereotyping – can you free your kids from it?

    Date: 2011.06.29 | Category: Rambling | Response: 3

We had a great, educational day today – we went to a museum where my kids learned about the history of trains and the railway in general, as well as railway trade unions. Then, we went to shop for a friend’s baby who just turned one. While looking for something, my daughter pointed at something sickly and pink, and said “That’s for girls”! Oh no, the dreaded gender stereotypes finally found out way into our family, after five years. Apparently, my daughter is getting gender messages every day, and only today did I realize to what extent.
