• Morning sickness remedies

Morning sickness, as this vomiting and nausea during pregnancy is still commonly but mistakenly called, can be one of the most challenging experiences of early pregnancy. Around 75 percent of all pregnant women will feel sick and vomit on a regular basis. There is no doubt that this is totally normal. But there are things you can do to make things a little easier for you. What are they?

    • Let’s start in the morning. This is rather common advice, but that is because it is effective for many women. Eat a really bland cracker or dry toast before you get up, along with a glass of water if you want to. This might soak up some of those stomach acids and could prevent vomiting.
    • Stay hydrated. Good hydration is the key to reducing many pregnancy complaints, and it’s very important for both mother and baby. Some women notice that an increase in fluid intake reduces morning sickness.
    • Home-made lemonade is another potential sickness-reducer.
    • Eat frequently, but small meals. Large meals can make you vomit, while small (nutritious!) meals help your blood sugar levels stay constant.
    • Keep track of what triggers your pregnancy nausea. For many, it’s certain foods – especially greasy or spicy ones. Other women find that smells cause vomiting, or even rapid movements. Eliminating your triggers, if possible, can help!
    • Go for a walk outside. Fresh air can help you to fight nausea, while stuffy spaces can aggravate it.
    • Raspberry Leaf Tea is a great pregnancy tea. Some say it can help against morning sickness too.
    • Ginger in any form is a great remedy for any kind of nausea.

Now, I might be weird, but what helped me fight pregnancy nausea (which I had until I was five months pregnant with my daughter) most was ice cream. Coca-cola helped both nausea and heartburn go away, believe it or not. That is not very natural, and not very healthy – I know! – but it did the trick. And another good “remedy” is just vomiting. Once you have thrown up, you might well find that the nausea clears up.

Moms, what helped you fight morning sickness?
