  • Pregnant in America – a review

    There are quite a few documentaries about natural childbirth, and the problems with American maternity care, around. The Business of Being Born is perhaps the most well-known, but Pregnant in America is at least as good. In this documentary, film maker Steve Buonagurio takes viewers on his journey towards fatherhood and learning about the medicalized system of birth, as well as its more gentle alternative – homebirth. This film was intimate, honest, and optimistic, despite the film maker’s own discoveries of some of the tragedies of the maternity care system.

  • The Business of Being Born – a review

    The Business of Being Born, a documentary about birth in the United States made by Ricki Lake, is often described as a must-see by natural childbirth advocates. It is a useful introduction to different birth choices for women considering where to give birth, giving a very visual illustration of the pros and cons of the various options.

  • The Childbearing Year – a great resource for herbal remedies

    Families who have decided to have unassisted pregnancies and births take full responsibility for their own care during these crucial times. Many women focus on healthy living and a wholesome, balanced diet as the primary means of prenatal care. Those who do need a little extra help often turn to herbal medicine for their care. Herbs are accessible, potent, and you don’t need a medical license to make use of their powers. But don’t you just wish there was a comprehensive herbal manual for pregnancy and birth sometimes? A place you can turn to in times of need, and simply in order to prepare for the unexpected?

    Such a manual does, in fact, exist. It is called Wise Woman Herbal for The Childbearing Year and was written by a herbalist who is appropriately named Susun Weed (Is that her real name? One has to wonder! It would be one big coincidence if it was…). I’ve been fortunate enough to receive a copy of this wonderful book to review, and I am delighted to share my conclusions with you!
