  • Parenting essentials checklist: mom’s inner rebel and her kids’ voices

    Date: 2011.02.08 | Category: Rambling | Response: 16

Does it really take a village to raise a child? According to many, this famous saying is an absolute truth. There is no doubt that society impacts the development of children in so much more than a passing fashion. The shared attitudes of any society leave its imprints on all of us, consciously or sub-consciously, in many big and small ways which will stay with us forever. Society – the village – is all around us, and it will play a role in a growing child’s development, both positively and negatively. But does that mean that it takes a village to raise a child?

  • Children and bodily integrity

    Date: 2011.02.07 | Category: Rambling | Response: 13

How would you react if a stranger were to start stroking your hair? What would you do if a stranger roughly pushed you aside at the mall, because he or she wanted to pass? And if a neighbor you didn’t like lifted you up and kissed you? I can’t answer for you, of course, but I can tell you how I would feel, and what I would do. At the very least, I would swear. And I might even punch the person in question. And I am certain that everyone would understand that. Yet, all of those things regularly happen children, and hardly anyone questions it.

“Sunday Surf”, where bloggers share their links to interesting stuff they saw on the net, is quite popular. I love seeing this feature on other blogs, and it often tells me about fascinating, thought-provoking articles that I would have missed otherwise. Great stuff! From now on, you’ll be able to find Sunday Surf on Write About Birth. These are my first links of the week.

  • What does tooth decay have to do with birth?

    Date: 2011.01.20 | Category: Rambling | Response: 8

I am sad to say that my two year old son has developed dental cavities, on his upper front teeth. We eat reasonably healthily, and brush our teeth reasonably well. My four year old daughter has healthy teeth. I have a few theories, but one thing is clear in my mind: I do not want my little boy to have rotten teeth, and I sure don’t want his adult teeth affected. So I went to a dentist. Sounds straight forward enough, right?

  • Parenting as a joint venture

    Date: 2011.01.10 | Category: Rambling | Response: 13

My two children, who are now four and two years old, never cease to amaze me. They are constantly and visibly learning, soaking up everything they encounter like little sponges. I might have started my life as a parent thinking that I would play a large role in my children’s development, but the truth is a little different. Everything in life is educational and while my kids might take note of all the things I do, they learn all by themselves.
