Home is where the school is
Have you noticed a theme on this blog? Homebirth, working from home… and now homeschooling. Over here, we really do like doing stuff at home. But of course, Write About Birth is a birth-themed blog and I don’t want to cross-contaminate it with too much info about other stuff we do at home, besides birthing. So, I started a new blog about homeschooling.

Where are you from?
“Where are you from?” is a question that people ask me and my children many times in only one day. Now that I have started speaking English to my kids full-time to build their comprehension and usage of the language, it is even worse. This constant query has made me question as well… Just where are you from?

Gender stereotyping – can you free your kids from it?
We had a great, educational day today – we went to a museum where my kids learned about the history of trains and the railway in general, as well as railway trade unions. Then, we went to shop for a friend’s baby who just turned one. While looking for something, my daughter pointed at something sickly and pink, and said “That’s for girls”! Oh no, the dreaded gender stereotypes finally found out way into our family, after five years. Apparently, my daughter is getting gender messages every day, and only today did I realize to what extent.

Writing about birth for one year now!
Write About Birth has been online for one year now! I know this, because my web hosting company just sent me an invoice for the next year. I paid it immediately since they were quick to note that failure to do so would take the website offline pretty quickly. One year, and quite a few articles! I hope I have been of help to families who have been looking for practical information on preparing for unassisted birth, as well as through sharing more controversial views about the nature of childbirth.

Homeschooling adventures
My older child is addicted to mathematics these days, and the moment I get on my computer to start writing, she asks me when we will continue school work – mostly maths! Her constant stream of questions and requests has not been leaving me much time to blog, work, or anything much. Plus, it’s summer and we are enjoying the nice weather while we can. I thought I’d share some recent gems from my nearly five-year old with you folks. She makes me smile (and drives me crazy sometimes), so I hope she’ll do the same for you.

Milk teeth hell
I have already written about my two year old son’s tooth decay and the state of dentistry in the country I live in before (What does tooth decay have to do with birth?). My son has dental caries on his four front teeth, and up until recently I was unable to find a dentist who would treat him. Not only is there no option of general anesthetic or other option in which the young patient is no awake for the treatment, but pediatric dentists either refuse to treat milk teeth at all, or drill but don’t fill the hole. Something to do with, according to dentists, “gasses” being released from the teeth?

Notes on the Terrible Twos
“Self, self!” These are my two year-old son’s favorite words now. He wants to carry his own shopping basket, walk up stairs completely unassisted, dress himself, and pour his own breakfast cereal. The list of stuff he wants to do unassisted is pretty much endless. Oh, and of course he thinks he is too grown to have to hold my hand when we walk along the street now, as well. It seems those Terrible Twos that are so infamous amongst toddler parents have well and truly started. Or… has he just taken over his mom’s attitudes?

It’s spring!
It’s raining over here, but spring has definitely arrived! We have been busy crafting and spring cleaning. How have you welcomed the beginning of spring?

Please tell me about 404 errors
Since I have changed my URL format, a lot of 404 “not found” errors have been turning up. Not good stuff. These posts have fallen victim to a URL error, but I still have them. If you come across any, please send me the link at info@writeaboutbirth.com or just post it here so I can get the article back up. Thanks!

Sick – again!
My apologies for the lack of posting in recent days. My kids and I all got sick again on Tuesday, which was after quite a few colds and an episode of chickenpox. As we spent days in bed, spring arrived in our part of the world. Well, I’m back now!
