Hi,

My name is Olivia. I’m a journalist, and solo mom of two great kids. I am unconventional. I am a homebirther who tried both a midwife-attended birth and an unassisted birth. We are also vegetarian, breastfeed for a long time and used cloth diapers. Now, we’re homeschooling and having a lot of fun! I try to be a gentle mama, but confess to having a bit of a temper. Basically, I guess I am just your typical crunchy mom.

This blog is about birth, and all related matters. Why? Because reproductive rights are so important, and being able to choose what is best for you and your family requires you to have access to information. Women struggle with a lack of choice and a lack of resources when it comes to having a great birth all over the world. Birth matters – it lays the foundation for mothers and babies alike.

Can you advise on circumsizing? I am having a homebirth and am torn on this issue. I was thinking not to do it but my husband thinks we should. Our midwife won’t do it so we’d have to find a doctor and pay for it. I think the baby might look better with a circumsized genital and my husband says he won’t get cancer that way. But I’m worried about pain and the pictures I’ve seen look very painful. My midwife says leaving it alone is natural. My husband is worried. Do you have any experience with this? I don’t want to hurt my baby.I don’t even know if we are having a girl or boy but will know in another 5 – 6 weeks.

Hi!

I live in Europe, where nobody circs, except some who do it for religious reasons. The foreskin is a functional body part, that does not pose any risks – ask the majority of men on the planet how they feel about being intact, and most of them will answer that they are very happy with their foreskin. My son is intact (where we are, no doctor would even carry out a circumcision without a REAL medical need) and caring for an intact penis is not difficult in any way, nor have we ever had infections. I’d advise you to watch this video – http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6584757516627632617&hl=en# – of a routine infant circumcision. http://www.circumstitions.com/ also has tons of useful information.

I believe that circumcision is first and foremost a personal choice – one that should be made by the male in question.

Hey Olivia! I wanted to let you know I’m not ignoring your recent comment on my blog. This month has been insane for my family and myself. I would LOVE to exchange posts, but can’t commit to much just yet. I do have some plans to write about birth plans and probably lots of other birth-related stuff.

I tend to post article-type stuff on Fridays (I’ve been trying to do every Friday ~ so far, so good). Pretty much ANY of your topics would fit on my blog, too.
